FALL LANDSCAPING
by Carole Schwalm
You can continue pruning: shorten back the branches that have finished flowering. Trim hedges – last chance before it starts getting cold!
Prune roses. Remove the old canes. Divide bulbs like iris. This is an opportune time to add compost and/or improve the soil. Replant and continue watering.
Dead-heading flowers will extend your season and they may surprise you by re-blooming.
If you are still able to enjoy the outdoors, but there are fewer and fewer flowers, visit your nursery or big box store. Many of the stores are loaded with mums and pansies. Slip the flowering containers in and fill in the blanks.
It isn't too late to plant some cool-season crops like kale and spinach. You can expand the crops and the season if you have a cold frame or a greenhouse.
Share your experience with fall landscaping or if you'd like more information.
